The 640M style Dial depth gage is a direct reading tool with hardened and ground 2-1/2" long base and push-button mechanism. The conctact is slightly up inside the base at rest with the zero reference being the ground flat face of the base. To take a reading the base is placed on the zero reference of the part being measured and the top button is pushed down to contact the work.
