The 640MR style Dial depth gage is a direct reading tool with hardened and ground 2-1/2" long base and reverse movement (no push-button). The zero reference is the ground flat face of the base. To take a reading the rounded contact point is inserted in the workpiece and the gage is pushed down to meet the zero reference on the base.
